Technology is something that we can’t live without, these days. Everyone in our modern world is connected- whether we want to be. Though there are some who have varying levels of approval, technology is universally used by all humans. Whether it’s a sharpened stick or a smartphone. For me, technology has changed my life, expanded my awareness to levels I could never have imagined and It’s enabled me to live a far more comfortable life than my ancestors.

For Me, Technology Is What And Who We Are

Would an ant colony shun the hills that they dig? Would we ever find a bird that is disgusted at the building of a nest? When we observe nature, we find that animals are no strangers to altering their environment, in order to facilitate their own survival. When we think of “technology”, we often imagine that it is something separate from us; an encroaching evil, which takes over our “humanity”. This is untrue and illogical. To me, technology is simply the same as an animal’s teeth and claws.

We, humans, evolved to use tools to assist us in ways that our bodies could not. It’s what made us successful enough to become what we are today. If our ancestors stopped at any point to consider whether or not the spear was one and the same as the hunter, they would starve.

About 100,000 years ago, humanity found itself only 10,000 strong, in the Rift Valley of Africa. We were going to go extinct, due to the most recent Ice Age.

In order to survive, we needed to rely on innovative ways to regulate our body temperatures, as we are hairless apes. Skinning other animals’ fur and wearing it, learning to communicate via complex grunts, and ultimately, mastering the very forces of nature itself was what enabled us to survive. The humans who refused to move forward didn’t make it.

When I see someone who says they don’t like Technology, I wonder why they aren’t naked in the forest picking random berries, then.

We cannot live without our technology, because we ARE our technology. Humanity and technology are one and the same.

This is why I learned to embrace what we are. Technology isn’t something to be afraid of, it’s something to be used and understood.

Yes, there are things that can be harmful if misused, but that’s the intention, not technology.

There’s No Escaping It, We Can’t Go Back

As much as people want to believe that building a bunch of shacks in the forest and acting like hunter-gatherers is how we’re “supposed” to be, it isn’t. Evolution decided long ago, that we need to come down from the trees. She made us walk upright, and changed our musculature and bodies so that we can use tools in an adaptive manner. In exchange, we lost our trademark “ape-like” strength- locked away in a genetic pandora’s box, to be opened at times of extreme adrenal duress.

We are weaker than other apes because we’re adapted for fine motor skills… we’re adapted for technological prowess.

We can’t return to make, there is no monkey to return to. Now, if you want to live a modest life, with simple tools, that’s okay.

If you want to say that advancing technology is going to destroy us, you’re foolish.

Just like 100,000 years ago, Technology is likely going to be what saves our butts from ourselves.

The Forward Escape

There’s a military tactic that’s popularized by the French. It’s called “The Forward Escape”. The idea is that, as you’re fighting your way through great opposition, you may find yourself surrounded on all sides. In these cases, a retreat is typically impossible.

Therefore, the only option is to steel yourself and fight your way forward and up the middle; to the safety of the other side of the battle.

With our technology, we now find ourselves in a situation, where we can’t just “Stop”, and let the mess we’ve made run its course.

The only solution, then, is to continue to innovate our way to a cleaner, more sustainable, and ultimately more advanced technology.

By doing this, we can reverse our own mistakes and halt runaway climate change, even reverse it.
