German Bionic is a German company that has created a fifth-generation intelligent exoskeleton called the Cray X. The equipment is different in that it is able to learn from users’ mistakes. Combined with the Smart Safety Companion system, it is capable of alleviating common injuries associated with lifting weights.

There is nothing new about exoskeletons that support human physical work. However, the German company German Bionic decided to improve this solution. The result of the engineers’ work is the fifth generation of the Cray X, which can be called an intelligent exoskeleton.

The outfit is made in the form of a backpack weighing 7 kg with cylinders attached to the hips. They are responsible for the movement of carbon fiber connectors attached to the upper part of the legs. This allows a person in an upright position to carry objects weighing up to 30 kg.

The Smart Safety Companion helps alleviate common injuries that people can experience when lifting heavier objects.

It’s a real-time app that runs in the background and can alert an employee when ergonomic risks become too high, explains Norma Steller, head of IoT at German Bionic.

The Smart Safety Companion collects a range of telemetry data, which is then analyzed by a machine-learning-based algorithm. This information is seen not only by employees, but also by their superiors, who can subject it to further analysis.

Scientists at Kyoto University have created a special filter that is made from antibodies found in ostriches. When they are exposed to ultraviolet light and come into contact with the coronavirus, they glow. This makes it possible to recognize that someone is “positive,” for example, even before complicated tests and blood tests are performed.

Scientists invented this method after they injected a protein spike of the virus into ostriches (animals are said to be very resistant to coronaviruses) and then extracted antibodies from the yolks of bird eggs. And then put them in filters in a protective mask. So, what’s the purpose of all this? According to one of the scientists, Yasuhiro Tsukamoto, if a viral infection can be detected by this type of antibody on the filter on the face, people with COVID-19 that are asymptomatic or in the early stages of infection can be promptly examined and treated. Of course, it’s not just about the Sars-CoV-2 virus; Tsukamoto says the technique is applicable to other viral diseases as well.

Getting energy directly from the sun is becoming more popular every year, and it seems that big companies and homeowners alike are interested in it. From time to time we hear about new ways to use photovoltaic panels, and one has just unveiled a “solar rock” project that is expected to produce one million kilowatt hours per year.

These ambitious proposals were presented by the Dutch company MVRDV, which wants to create a building entirely covered by solar panels. This structure is to be the already mentioned “solar rock,” which was originally designed by Taiwan’s state-owned energy company Taipower as a tourist attraction. As you can see in the photos, the facade is imposing and slightly rounded (hence the name).

However, it was soon discovered that the site where the “Sun Rock” was to stand was exposed to strong sunlight year-round. Combined with the characteristic shape of the building, this maximizes the amount of energy received, which will then be converted into electricity. In addition, the panels will have adjustable tilt angles to best match the current position of the sun.

The building itself, of course, will have windows and vents to allow natural light and air to enter. No word yet on how many solar panels the designers decide to install – the press release mentions that the total area used for energy generation will be 4,000 m2. In practice, it will mean the production of one million kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year, which corresponds, according to the MVRDV, to the energy produced by burning 85 tons of crude oil.

In addition, the “solar rock” could be expanded with additional panels, which is expected to increase the level of energy generated to 1.7 million kWh per year. The biggest benefit of the investment, however, is the ability to easily transfer excess electricity to the general grid.

“Sun Rock is to have approx. 12,900 m2, and the building will include a warehouse, repair shop and offices. The first floor will be reserved for public use. This Dutch-Taiwanese project is scheduled to open in 2024.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are one of the most serious problems of modern medicine because, unfortunately, they are growing at such a rate that we cannot keep up with new drugs. And they are causing real damageā€¦

Overuse of antibiotics as a result of misconceptions about their effectiveness in viral infections, or prescribing them without checking which bacteria are actually being dealt with, is causing antibiotic-resistant bacteria to grow at an alarming rate. More and more people are dying from common, previously curable infections as available antibiotics become less effective against them. What is the extent of this phenomenon?

Thanks to a study just published in the journal Lancet by an international team of researchers that includes data from 204 countries, we learn that more than 1.2 million people died in 2019 because of infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

It is worth emphasizing that this is much higher than the annual number of deaths from AIDS or malaria, which in the same year cost us about 860,000 and 640,000 lives, respectively. Scientists point out that the poorest countries suffer the most, but antibiotic resistance poses a serious threat to all. Accordingly, they call for immediate major investments in new drugs, because it will take years to develop them, and in the meantime the situation will only get worse.

For example, UK experts warn that unwarranted attempts to treat COVID-19 with antibiotics could lead to a real pandemic in a pandemic environment.

It is also worth stressing that the figure of 1.2 million refers only to deaths directly caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics (mainly lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, which resulted in sepsis), because if we take into account deaths in which superbacteria played a role, we are talking about up to 5 million patients !

The most deadly of the bacteria is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but E. coli and several other bacteria known to be resistant are also on the list.

We also learn that the most vulnerable patient group is children under the age of 5, where one in five deaths is associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As for the regions with the worst situation in general, i.e. patients of all ages, it is sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where the death rate from superbacteria is 24 cases per 100,000 population.
